Welcome
We are pleased to welcome you to Washington, DC for WCPG 2011, the XIXth annual World Congress of Psychiatric Genetics. Psychiatric genetics is the application of empirical quantitative and molecular methods to understand the genetic underpinnings of mental illness. WCPG is the major psychiatric genetics meeting of the year, where hundreds of researchers and clinicians from all over the world converge to discuss advances in the field.
This year, as we move through the era of genome wide association studies to sequencing and functional genomics, we have chosen the theme “Genes to Biology.” This theme emphasizes the major challenge now facing our field: Translating genetic discoveries into a better biological understanding of mental illness.
Advances in the field are challenging our notions of diagnosis, treatment planning, and genetic risk assessment. Genetic markers cross diagnostic boundaries. There is a great need to apply a more personalized approach to treatment, informed by genetics. Our ability to sequence each patient’s genome will soon give us an unprecedented view of individual risk for comorbidity, adverse events, and suicide. How will we integrate this knowledge into the next generation of clinical care and psychiatric research?
Early September is perhaps the best time to visit Washington, DC. The weather tends to be cooler and dry, and the crowds of tourists are gone from the many monuments, museums, and public places that are major attractions during the spring and summer. We have chosen a meeting venue located on the very edge of the city with easy access to restaurants, public transportation, and the woodland trails of Rock Creek Park.
We hope you will join us for WCPG 2011!
